Aida fabrics are woven using paired or grouped threads to give squares that are stitched over, and are made from 100% cotton. They are a great 'starter' fabric for beginner stitchers. The stitch count of Aida refers to the number of squares to the inch. Aida fabric is typically 110cm (43") wide - narrower than evenweaves and linens, which means that fat quarters and other cut sizes, are proportionately smaller (e.g. a fat quarter of Aida will be 55 x 50cm / 21.7" x 19.7" rather than 70 x 50cm / 27.5" x 19.7").
22 count Aida is traditionally used for Hardanger.
When hand-dyed, Aida tends to be paler in comparison to evenweave, and much paler in comparison to linen fabrics dyed using the same formulation.
