Hand-dyed fabrics

Important information about price increases below - please read before you order!

Hand-dyed fabrics are dyed-to-order, so each piece is freshly prepared for you, the customer. White fabrics from Zweigart are used as the base fabric. 

Most of the fabric colours are prepared using a single colour of dye. Some, however, use two or more colours of dye. This can result in even more colours in the final dyed fabrics as the dyes blend where they meet on and in the fabric. Colour consistency from batch to batch cannot be guaranteed - sometimes the fabric may be darker than previous batches, sometimes it will be lighter. 

Opalescent fabrics will give a 'sparkle' to the finished result. Where an image on this site includes sparkle, that is because it is dyed on opalescent fabric. The sparkle will NOT be present if the same colour is dyed on non-opalescent fabric!

Hand-dyed prices

I am in the process of updating the website, focusing on fabrics to start with. Standard fabrics have been updated, and now include information about other colours available.

Prices for hand-dyed fabrics listed on the website have now all been updated. If you find an error (e.g. a decimal place in the wrong place) please let me know!

This is the first price increase for fabrics (hand-dyed or standard) since February 2009 - 17 years! Unfortunately the cost of 'raw' materials (fabrics, dyes, chemicals) and other inputs (e.g. electricity) have gone up very significantly in the last 17 years.

The next task is to add around 20 'new' colours to the website. Those who are able to view the samples in person or who belong/have belonged to Rainbow Club over the last few years will have already seen or received some of these colours. The samples for each colour need to be scanned and the fabrics need to be colour-matched to DMC before they can be added to the website - so please bear with me in this!

Because of the huge number of possible fabric type, fabric and size combinations, it is very difficult to show prices for each step of the ordering process. Prices for your selection will show in the shopping cart once you add product to the cart. NB for overseas customers - these prices include 15% GST (NZ sales tax), which is removed at the time you complete the shipping information. This information will be double-checked and any tax remaining will be removed before your payment is processed.

For overseas customers, prices shown do not include any customs or duty payable in your country. Where these are required to be paid by us as the sender, they will be calculated on the total cost of the products (i.e. excluding postage) and added on to your final total. 

For your convenience, the prices for standard cuts of linen and evenweave fabrics are shown in the table below. It should be noted that these are the sizes before dyeing - some shrinkage occurs during dyeing! Price in parentheses is the GST-exclusive price for shipping addresses outside NZ.

Custom Cuts

If you require a custom cut, please use the following guidance to determine what size to order:

Step 1: Add your required width and length (in inches or centimetres) and note down the total.

Step 2: Order based on the following guidance -

                If your total is more than 33.5" (85cm) and less than 47.2" (120cm) - order a fat quarter;

                If your total is more than 47.2" (120cm) and less than 66.9" ((170cm) - order a fat half;

                If your total is more than 66.9" (170cm) - order a full metre.

Step 3: Repeat steps 1 and 2 for all the pieces you wish to order.

Step 4: Use the comments box at checkout to tell us what the actual sizes you require are for each piece.

If you are not confident in the maths of it or would prefer a double-check on your calculations, email us with the stitched width and height (e.g. 200w x 300h) as well as your preferred finishing margin (e.g. 3" all around) or use the contact form to send a message. The best email to use for this is catherine. rozendaal @ gmail.com (copy this into your address box and take out the spaces!). Please put 'Custom Cut Enquiry' in the subject box so that it doesn't go to the spam folder! We can then message you back with the sizes you should order for your requirements.

The size of the piece(s) you receive will also depend on what is economical to cut - e.g. a request for a 25" x 25" (64 x 64cm) piece on a standard 55"/140cm width fabric will be cut as a 25" x 27.5" (64 x 70cm) piece, and you will be charged on that basis.

Where it is not possible to cut from a half width of fabric (55cm on Aida, 70cm on most other fabrics) you will be charged for the full width of the fabric. You can then opt to receive the additional fabric either as plain white fabric (at the white fabric price) or dyed to the same colour or another colour (at a pro-rated hand-dyed price). Example - your  requested size is 30" x 30" (76 x 76cm) on a standard 55"/140cm wide fabric. The fabric cut required to achieve this will be 30" x 55" (76 x 140cm). The 'offcut' will be 25" x 30" (64 x 76cm) - this is the piece that can be supplied undyed at the pro-rated white fabric price, or it can be hand-dyed to any colour of your choosing. The hand-dyed option would cost you the per square centimetre/square inch rate that applies to your requested size and fabric.
